The Dental Cleaning Process

Regular dental cleanings usually follow a comprehensive oral exam. Once your exam has been completed, unless your team at Riverside Dental Center has diagnosed gum disease, we will perform a regular dental cleaning, or prophylaxis.  If gum disease is discovered, we will recommend a deep cleaning below the gumline to address the infection and disease first and to then allow your mouth to heal.

With the first step of your regular dental cleaning, our hygienist will use a handheld scaler or an ultrasonic scaler to remove stubborn debris, calculus, and plaque from between your teeth and the enamel around your gum line.

When this scaling is completed, we then follow up with a polishing compound and will polish each tooth one at a time. Finally, we will methodically floss your teeth using dental floss.

During and following your dental cleaning, you will receive any necessary diagnostic and preventive services from Riverside Dental Center as well as any warranted educational information.

Diagnostic services will include:

  • Reviewing and updating your medical history, including information about medications, heart problems, pregnancy, and diabetes, which could impact your oral health.
  • An extensive evaluation of your gum tissue.
  • An oral cancer screening.
  • We check your biting, chewing, and swallowing patterns.
  • A complete examination of your teeth to detect decay.
  • Any x-rays to identify any problems below the surface.

Preventive services might include:

  • The removal of damaging plaque and tartar.
  • Identifying unwanted stains and the possible removal.
  • Possible Fluoride application.
  • Possible dental sealants for your child.
  • Polishing your teeth, including dental fillings and crowns.
  • The cleaning and adjusting of dentures and partial dentures.

Educational services might include:

  • Proper tooth brushing and flossing techniques.
  • Nutritional counseling for diet improvements.

Recommendations for future treatment:

  • When to return for follow-up treatments, periodontal (gum) concerns or restorative options.
  • An evaluation of your self-care effectiveness.
  • Tobacco suggestions.

That is it. Once your dental cleaning is completed, we will make any necessary follow up appointments.

Dental Cleaning for Adults

It is recommended that adults receive dental cleanings at least twice a year. Good oral health is essential regardless of your age. As we grow older, the risk for an oral infection increases. The older our teeth become, the more the protective enamel wears away, and it becomes easier to get a cavity. The best way to resist this is by brushing and flossing daily in addition to visiting Riverside Dental Center on a regular basis. We can offer you flexible appointment times so that you can make your appointment around your family or work schedule, making it as easy as possible to keep your teeth clean.

Pediatric Dental Cleanings for Children

At Riverside Dental Center, we recommend that you bring your child in for oral exams beginning at 12 months, and every 6 months after that.  Bringing your child in early and consistently is a way to create a good habit and to also establish your child’s comfort and confidence during these regular visits and develop a positive, trusting relationship with our team.

Dental Cleaning for Sensitive Teeth

At Riverside Dental Center, we always practice gentle dentistry and provide appropriate dental cleaning if you have sensitive teeth. Many adults avoid the dentist because of their concern that their teeth will hurt and may feel worse during the exam or cleaning. When working with our compassionate team, you can feel comfortable regardless of how sensitive your teeth are. We can offer the option of a variety of sedation methods so that you will not feel anything during your dental cleaning and examinations. Whether you need help for dental anxiety or for discomfort, we can develop a treatment plan that includes mild sedation, so you remain comfortable.
