Implant Supported Denture Loves Park IL

Implant supported dentures are quickly becoming a popular restoration that combines the benefits of two previous solutions into one successful option. A traditional denture is created to sit snuggly on your gums and is secured in proper place with dental adhesive. Implant supported dentures can now be your restoration if you are missing your teeth and have adequate jawbone density to support the implants. With the dental implants surgically placed into your jawbone, they now function like artificial roots and support, secure, and stabilize the dentures. Implant supported dentures have snap or clip onto attachments on the implant posts.

At Riverside Dental Center, we value our patient relationships, making it our priority to deliver gentle and compassionate care that you deserve from your dentist in Loves Park. We collectively focus on making you feel at ease by providing you exceptional care in a relaxed, convenient atmosphere. Our team goal is to develop lifelong relationships with our patients by combining the latest dental technology with a professional and caring staff. The result is a beautiful, healthy smile that will last a lifetime. We also emphasize preventive care and patient education because we want you to understand why it is so important to keep your mouth healthy and how to exercise daily hygiene to accomplish it. We are located at 2028 E. Riverside Blvd., Ste 210, Loves Park, IL, 61111. Please call us today at 815-877-4300 to schedule an appointment for an evaluation of the benefits of implant supported dentures for you and your smile.

Implant supported dentures can be placed in either your upper or lower jaw. You still need to clean the appliance daily and the gums beneath. You will be advised to not sleep with the implant supported dentures at night. You might wish to consider having permanent crown and bridgework that is permanent. Riverside Dental Center will review your restoration options following an evaluation.

Benefits with Implant Supported Dentures

There are definite benefits associated with implant supported dentures over traditional dentures. Here are a few for you to consider when deciding if this is the option for your situation and your lifestyle.

  • Implant supported dentures fit better and are more comfortable than conventional dentures. There is far less friction on the gums from with the implant supported denture, therefore no sores.
  • Implant supported dentures are more natural looking than traditional dentures.
  • Implant supported dentures are far more secure and stable than traditional dentures. They will not slip and become loose while you are speaking.
  • Implant supported dentures improve your biting and chewing ability. You will be able to eat harder foods. The implants deliver natural pressure and temperature sensations to the jawbone and your nerves.
  • The integrity of your jawbone is preserved, and bone atrophy is prevented.

How Implant Supported Dentures Function

There are two types: bar-retained and ball-retained. With both, the denture appliance is created of an acrylic base that looks like your natural gums. Porcelain, ceramic, or acrylic crowns replicating your natural teeth are attached to this base. Both versions need a minimum of two implants for proper support.

  • Bar-retained dentures — A thin metal bar following the curve of your arch is attached to two to five implants that are surgically placed. Clips are then fitted to the bar, the denture or both. The denture fits directly over this bar and is securely clipped into place.
  • Ball-retained dentures — Each dental implant has a metal attachment on the end that is ball shaped. These ball shaped attachments then snap directly into a female nylon socket placed precisely on the backside of the denture base.

The Implant Supported Dentures Process

During your initial consultation, the detail-conscious team at Riverside Dental Center will review your medical and dental histories, take x-rays, and create impressions of your gums to create a model. We may add a computed tomography (CT) scan of your mouth. This will identify the location of your sinuses and nerves above your upper arch. It will help guide us with the placement of the implants. A CT scan will confirm the jawbone density, and to pinpoint the specific locations for the implants. If you are not using dentures, we will make a temporary denture until your implant supported dentures are finished.

This temporary denture also confirms the ideal position for your artificial crowns in the permanent denture. When the temporary denture is finished, we can also use it as a surgical guide to direct the implants into the exact positions.

We next administer a local anesthetic to numb the immediate area for the implant placements. We will create small incisions to surgically place each tiny titanium post into the jawbone. We then close the sites with sutures.

Riverside Dental Center will wait several months to allow the jawbone and the implants to fuse, bond, and integrate.

After x-rays confirm that the implants have integrated with the jawbone, the next minor surgery is scheduled. A very small incision is made to expose the tops of the posts. We attach an abutment or extension to the top of the titanium post, so it will reach the surface of your gumline. After two quick weeks the gums are healed, and we can make the final impression of your gums and the abutments. This is the guide for the final denture framework, either ball or bar, exact positions.

With the final denture created, we may have some minor adjustments at your final fitting.

The Aftercare of Your Implant Supported Dentures

Riverside Dental Center will strongly recommend you remove your dentures at night for proper cleaning. We would also suggest you carefully clean around the attachments.

We will evaluate your restoration to make sure it is secure. Even though your new appliance is stable, it might still move slightly. This slight movement can cause minor sore spots. We check your gums and your bite upon insertion of the final appliance.

The retaining attachments on your dentures will need to be replaced at your 6-month checkups. They will show wear with constant use.
