If you have put off your dental cleaning for months or years, then you may be nervous about your upcoming visit. You might not remember what you can expect or how the dentist has changed since your last appointment. Thankfully, your provider is here to make it a comfortable and easy process. To help put you at ease, here’s a step-by-step guide on what generally happens.
Step #1: Checking into the Front Desk
Right after you walk into the practice’s door, you should head to the front desk and get checked in. You’ll be met with friendly smiles that are going to have you fill out some paperwork.
This will ask about things such as your medical and dental history, to name a few. Be honest on these forms, as it’ll help your dentist know about complications to watch out for. Give it back to the team and hand over your dental insurance, and then you will likely have to wait just a few minutes.
Step #2: Getting X-Rays and Starting the Cleaning
When your treatment room is ready, you’ll be taken back. You’ll likely need some X-rays taken, so they’ll do this before and while you sit down. Wearing a lead vest, you’ll bite down on plastic pieces and hold still while detailed images are being captured. These will help show what the naked eye can’t!
Once this is all done, your hygienist will then ask you about any concerns you have about your teeth or questions. You can bring up things like tooth sensitivity, gum inflammation, and bleeding when brushing or flossing.
Afterward, it’s time for the cleaning portion! Using state-of-the-art instruments, plaque and bacteria will be removed. While it may be much quieter and effective than you remember, it’s likely you may bleed or have discomfort. Just remember, this doesn’t mean there’s a problem going on.
Many people feel nervous or have anxiety about any dental service, and you may be no different. If that’s true for you, then you can consider asking about sedation dentistry. It’s a great way to help you feel more relaxed while you get the care you need.
Step #3: Scheduling Your Next Visit
Your teeth are now shiny and ready to be looked at by your dentist. They’ll swing by and do a thorough examination where they look for any oral health issues. Depending on what they find, you may get additional treatment or come back for it at a later date. Regardless, schedule your next cleaning! The more consistent you are with it, the easier they’ll be. Look forward to keeping up with a smile that is problem-free.
